Artist in residence at Agalab
Over the past two months, I participated in an artist-in-residence program at AgaLab, where I immersed myself in the Toyobo technique. This method, a form of intaglio printing, utilizes a photopolymer plate to etch and print images. For my series, I intentionally chose Toyobo printing because it perfectly bridges the gap between the traditional craft of intaglio and the modern innovations of AI, which I integrate into my artwork.
This combination creates a unique dialogue between tradition and innovation, the analog and the digital. The tactile nature of intaglio printing lends a sense of tangible emotion to my work, while the incorporation of AI introduces layers of complexity and a fresh perspective on image creation.
One of the most remarkable aspects of this experience was the incredible craftsmanship and dedication of the people at AGA LAB. Their passion for this art form is truly inspiring. The manual and multi-step nature of Toyobo printing makes it a challenging process, with plenty of opportunities for things to go wrong. At times, it was exhausting and frustrating. Yet, the expertise and guidance of the AGA LAB team made all the difference. Their years of experience and willingness to share their knowledge helped me overcome obstacles and learn an incredible amount.
This residency has been a unique experience for me. I am grateful to the team at AGA LAB for their support and I look forward to continuing to explore this technique.
